International symposium Westwalltag 2024 "Wetterau-Main-Tauber-Stellung" in Büdingen (DE)

27 September 29 September CEST

Annual symposium on German western fortifications organised by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Westwalltag incl. excursions

Preliminary programme:

On Friday, 27 September 2024 participants will meet to visit Cold War buildings in the Rhine-Main region as well as bunkers of the Wetterau-Main-Tauber position in the Büdingen area and the old town fortifications of Büdingen.

On Saturday, 28 September 2024 the participants will spend the whole day looking at buildings of the Wetterau-Main-Tauber position between Gelnhausen and Aschaffenburg.

On Sunday, 29 September 2024 The southern part of the Wetterau-Main-Tauber site follows before the "Westwalltag 2024" conference comes to an end in the afternoon.

Background:

Together with the Neckar-Enz position, the Wetterau-Main-Tauber position was one of the first two position systems of the western fortifications built between 1935 and 1945. In contrast to the expansion of the Siegfried Line, which began shortly afterwards, the two emplacements still complied with the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles.

The International Conference on the Western Fortifications has been organised annually on a voluntary basis since 1985. The up to 80 participants get to know the buildings in selected sections of the western fortifications and exchange ideas. Evening lectures and discussions complete the programme, which is summarised in a comprehensive excursion guide.
